MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound Women: Zoila Frausto Moves to No. 2

Filed under: Strikeforce, Bellator, Rankings, Women's OverallBellator did a great thing for women's mixed martial arts this season, putting together an eight-woman tournament that featured six very good American fighters, the undefeated Irishwoman Aisling Daly, and the undisputed best fighter in Japan, Megumi Fujii.

As it turned out, it was Zoila Frausto, who initially wasn't even supposed to be a part of the tournament, who won the whole thing, first knocking out Rosi Sexton to earn her spot in the tournament in June, then beating Jessica Pene by unanimous decision in August, Jessica Aguilar by split decision in September, and Megumi Fujii by split decision in October. It was a very impressive run over the last five months, and it moves her to No. 2 in our latest women's pound-for-pound rankings.

You won't be surprised to learn that No. 1 remains Cris Cyborg, whose powerful striking and killer instinct take women's MMA to another level. Find out the other eight in our Top 10 below.

Over the past decade, the WEC has succeeded in spotlighting lighter weight fighters as well as the creating of stars such as Urijah Faber, Jose Aldo and Miguel Torres, whom otherwise might not have received the same amount of recognition.

Video Evidence: Maximo Blanco Zombifies Kiumu Kunioku at Sengoku 15

(The whole fight is worth watching, but if you’re in a hurry just go ahead and start at 6:30 for the good stuff. VidProps: MegaVideo)
When you have a name as epic as Maximo Blanco I guess you really have no choice but to be the kind of fighter who throws hands with reckless abandon and racks up highlight reel knockouts like they’re going out of style. If you fight primarily in Japan, it’s also OK to have your nickname be “Maxi” and your fighting exploits described as “Maxi Time!” despite what we in the west might see as the uncomfortably close proximity of that name to a certain brand of feminine hygiene products. Regardless, Blanco’s blockbuster knockout of Kiumu Kunioku from Sengoku 15 over the weekend is definitely a worth a watch.
The fight moves along at a pretty good clip for the first six-and-a-half minutes, until Blanco abruptly decides that it's fuckin’ MAXI TIME. The current lightweight King of Pancrase drops Kunioku with a punch and follows it with a soccer kick that causes the Japanese veteran to snatch desperately for a single leg. Blanco spins free of it (doing sort of an atomic butt drop on Kunioku in the process) and then absolutely crushes him with an uppercut as he tries to stand. You know the rest: Strikes on the ground until the ref stops it while Michael Schiavello yells, “He almost decapitated him! It’s good night freaking Irene!” For once, the play-by-play shouter’s histrionics seem to fit the situation nicely.

Trainer Trevor Wittman Explains Why He's the Happiest Man on Fight Night

Filed under: UFC, FanHouse ExclusiveIn some ways, Trevor Wittman is to a UFC pay-per-view as a great character actor is to a Hollywood blockbuster. Even if you don't know his name, you recognize him as soon as you see him on screen.

That's because the 36-year-old Wittman -- trainer to fighters like Shane Carwin, Rashad Evans, Nate Marquardt, and several others-- has a trademark. While other trainers and coaches are scowling their way to the cage, Wittman is the slightly goofy guy who's grinning like a golden retriever with his head stuck out the car window.

"Brock [Lesnar] told me, 'Man, you've got the most intimidating smile in the game,' Wittman laughs. "You look across the cage at the other guys and you usually see that tough guy look. Me, I'm just happy to be there and excited to see my guy perform."

Rick Hawn's Seoi-Nage Judo Throw

One of the more fun finishes you'll see in MMA this year (video above) involved a ground-and-pound sequence by 2004 judo Olympian Rick Hawn last week at Bellator 33 initiated with a beautiful judo throw.

The one-arm shoulder throw, referred to in judo as a "seoi-nagi," was all instinctual, says the four-time National judo champion.

"It was just second nature," Hawn told MMAFighting.com. "He was in the right position and I took advantage of it. Didn't even think about doing it, was just a reaction. It helps when you have done that throw for 20-plus years as well."

ESPN Host's Remark That UFC is Starting Its Own TV Network Fuels Speculation That Announcement is Imminent

It may have been a speculative remark fueled by an interview Dana White did with Broadcasting Cable this week in which the UFC president intimated that his promotion was considering starting its own television network, but to many MMA news sites, an eight-second conversation the hosts of ESPN's Pardon The Interruption show had on the subject yesterday was enough to prompt speculation that this is the major announcement that will be made during today's media conference call.
Here's what White told BC's Ben Grossman:

"A lot of people don't realize we are in a half a billion homes around the world. You know all the things we've been through in the United States, but this sport travels well. Cricket will never be big here and the NFL will never be big around the world. But we are all human beings and fighting is in our DNA. We get it and we like it. So we are working on a couple moves now and should be in a billion homes around the world in the next couple months. Sports Business Journal just came out with a survey asking big names in the industry which sport could start its own network and 4 out of 5 said us. They are right. I agree. That will happen within the next couple years. You are starting to see now ESPN is starting to cover us more. I think this is one of those things ESPN will probably kick themselves in 10 years saying, 'We could have fucking had that.'"

It is possible that if it is true that ESPN got wind of the news, considering they have a deal to broadcast UFC events and to produce satellite pre and post-event MMA Live programs, but it's more likely that PTI is just throwing the scenario out there to create dialogue on the possibility.

Dave Camarillo Explains Crying After Velasquez's Title Win

Filed under: UFCAmerican Kickboxing Academy trainer Dave Camarillo is not one to distance himself from his emotions. A win for one of his students is a win for himself. So while Cain Velasquez remained his stoic self after defeating Brock Lesnar Saturday at UFC 121, Camarillo was the complete opposite, bawling with happiness over AKA's newest champion.

The self-described "cage-crying MMA trainer" spoke to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour Monday and talked about the significance of Velasquez's win for AKA.

"I've been emotional before, it wasn't the first time, but this was definitely the biggest win that AKA has ever had," Camarillo said. "It was our first homegrown champion, but not just a champion, heavyweight champion, which I think more eyes are on than any other division, especially facing Brock Lesnar and everything just came together."

Dana White Hints That Tito Ortiz Could Be Cut After UFC 121 Loss

Filed under: UFC, NewsUFC president Dana White didn't outright say it, but twice in the aftermath of UFC 121, he hinted that we might have seen the end of "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz in the UFC's octagon.

Ortiz lost to Matt Hamill in a unanimous decision in one of the night's featured bouts, a defeat that marked his fourth setback in his last five fights (he also has a draw in that time). Many fighters are cut after two or three losses, leading reporters to question White about the former light-heavyweight champion's future.

When Bully Tactics Fail at UFC 121, Brock Lesnar Flounders

Filed under: UFCANAHEIM, Calif. - Moments before he made his entrance to a chorus of jeers and cheers at UFC 121 in the Honda Center on Saturday night, a bearded Brock Lesnar appeared on the big screen to identify himself as the baddest man on the planet - a claim he's repeated often lately, and one which few have bothered to argue.

Not long after that, the big man was sitting on the canvas, watching Cain Velasquez celebrate as the new champion while a cageside doctor attended to Lesnar's bloody face.

Funny how quickly reality can shift in this business, often right out from under your feet.

For the moments in Saturday night's main event where he was charging forward, Lesnar looked every bit as ferocious as advertised. But when it failed to stop Velasquez from offering up any offense of his own, that's when we were reminded that we really don't know all that much about this guy who, just minutes earlier, was calling himself the best.

Five Foes For A Surging Carlos Condit

<B>By MATT MOLGAARD<BR>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>

Carlos Condit has been riding the rollercoaster of success lately. Hell, he?s been on the ?coaster for four and a half years. In that time he?s put together 11 victories against a lone defeat (at the hands of Martin Kampmann). And I?d be willing to bet a god 80% of people who watched that Kampmann fight scored it for Condit, I know I did.<BR><BR>

Regardless, the man?s proven his worth for just about every major promotion in existence. He?s enjoyed great success in Pancrase, tore a hole through the Rumble On The Rock promotion (prior to meeting Jake Shields), won and defended the WEC welterweight title, and now he?s put together three back-to-back wins inside the UFC?s octagon.<BR><BR>

If that?s not putting in work, I don?t know what is.<BR><BR>

So, now that Condit has blown through another highly regarded opponent, who should be chosen to challenge the New Mexico native? I?ve got a handful of ideas?<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

<B>Martin Kampmann:</B><BR><BR>

It?s too bad Kampmann and Jake Shields are tied up, because they?ll both make for great bouts with Condit, and they?re both going to make this list. The first time Condit and Kampmann fought, it was a back and forth war that saw both men put in danger. The glaring difference in the fight was the aggression of Condit, who exploded on multiple occasions, inflicting significant damage, clearly trying to finish the fight. What should have been a Carlos Condit decision victory went the wrong way, and it?s just about time for Condit to get that W back.<BR><BR>

<B>Chris Lytle:</B><BR><BR>

Chris Lytle has a well rounded enough game to give any opponent fits, even elite competition. A clash between Condit and Lytle would be nothing short of explosive, as Lytle?s hands may be a bit sharper, while Condit?s Jiu Jitsu just a tad bit more precise. The two would likely nullify each other, but as opposed to a boring chess match, we?d probably be in for a giant ball of dust and ruckus. Who exists the haze the winner is any man?s guess.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

<B>Ben Askren:</B><BR><BR>

Ben may not fight for the UFC, but he?d make for a damn interesting bout with Condit just the same. Askren?s technical wrestling abilities will pose all kinds of threats for Condit, but Condit?s explosive guard and polished Jiu Jitsu game could easily lead to a submission victory. Now, should Condit find a way to stuff Ben?s takedown?s, it?s The Natural Born Killer all the way.<BR><BR>

<B>Nick Diaz:</B><BR><BR>

If you want to see two warriors who refuse to quit, can box well, and possess lethal submission games fight each other, you stick these two in a cage. Nick Diaz is a nightmare for any man with average (or below) wrestling. His hands never stop moving, and his ground game is about as slick as it comes at 170 pounds. Condit is a mirror image of Diaz, but has the tendency to explode more often, and mix his strikes up a bit better. Both men have near-unbreakable chins, and both are performing at their peak right now. This is a match made in Heaven.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

<B>Jake Shields:</B><BR><BR>

These two fought back in 2006 at Rumble on the Rock 9. The bout was closely contested, but Shields did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory. Over the last four plus years, these two have both improved leaps and bounds, and both added well regarded scalps to their collection. It?s most likely that should Shields defeat Martin Kampmann at UFC 121, he?ll be tossed into the cage with Georges St. Pierre (assuming he still has the title). However, should some odd occurrence unfold and Shields lose, or not find himself in line to fight GSP, this is a rematch that must happen. A win for Shields proves the first bout was no fluke and he?s worthy of the ranking he totes. A win for Condit immediately launches him into the top 5 of the division, and lines him up as a serious contender for the title.<BR><BR>

Exactly what will happen by the time Condit fights again is as much a mystery as who Condit?s next opponent will be. One way or the other, I?m pulling for another A-list foe; this kid deserves it.<BR><BR>

Who Will Be The UFC Heavyweight Champion Come October 24?

<B>By MATT MOLGAARD<BR>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>

Come Saturday night two of the most dangerous heavyweights in mixed martial arts will meet when champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) looks to defend his title against the undefeated Cain Velasquez (8-0). It is, perhaps the most important heavyweight bout since Mirko Crocop challenged Fedor Emelianenko over five years ago under the Pride banner.<BR><BR>

The reason being? We?ve got two of the top five ranked heavyweights in the world meeting to determine who is the clear-cut heavyweight king. Not only that, but we?re looking at two men who have memorable personalities and unique public personas. Cain is a humble fellow, brimming with fan appreciation and an endearing self deprecating quality (though he?s got no need for it, the man is becoming a monster, the self criticism can take a break). Meanwhile Brock Lesnar is the biggest draw in MMA history, and he?s the perfect heel with a novel of quotes tucked in his trunks.<BR><BR>

Few in the heavyweight division these days pose much of a threat (save for perhaps Junior dos Santos, Fedor Emelianenko, Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem) to either man in all honesty. Velasquez has stopped seven of eight opponents. Amongst his victims are former Pride fighting Championships heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former International Fight League standout Ben Rothwell, and the always dangerous striker Cheick Kongo. Of those three men, only Kongo managed to survive a full 15 minutes.<BR><BR>

Throughout his brief career Cain has shown marked improvement in the striking department, learning to string precise, powerful punches together. He?s also no slouch on the ground; he?s a two-time All American collegiate wrestler, and he?s developed a sturdy submission game that should prevent him from being caught in any arm-triangle chokes. Factor in a highly impressive ability to recover and a solid clinch game and you?re looking at one of the most well rounded men in MMA.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

Meanwhile champion Brock Lesnar is carving out a similar path, though he looks to be evolving at a slightly slower rate. Brock has devastating power in his fists, but his combinations lack the fluidity of Velasquez?s. He?s clearly improved since his 2007 debut, but he hasn?t excelled at the same rate as his foe, that appears obvious. While touting the superior wrestling credentials (Brock is a former NCAA champion with a wrestling record of 106-5), Brock hasn?t learned to utilize his wrestling in a cage quite as well as Velasquez has, though he?s got an explosive double leg when he happens to time the shot perfectly. In short, he?s a bigger version of Velasquez, with a little less shine on his game, which is no knock - the man?s had a mere six professional bouts.<BR><BR>

Within those six bouts lies a telling story, I should mention. While Velasquez has disposed of one former champion, Lesnar has put away two, Frank Mir and Randy Couture, both in devastating fashion. He also stopped the seemingly unbeatable power puncher Shane Carwin with a come-from-behind submission victory. This is a man who?s got serious heart, and an unwavering will to win.<BR><BR>

So, who has the advantage? I?m leaning toward Velasquez. Despite the glaring size difference, he?s got the physical tools and composure to get the job done. Should Lesnar draw first blood however, and dictate a relentless ground-and-pound influenced pace, Cain could wilt, or worse, go to sleep. It is in all actuality a toss-up fight. Neither man has a wealth of experience, but both are supremely gifted. One way or the other, whomever should exit the cage Saturday night the victor, they?ve got a dangerous challenge in Junior dos Santos waiting in the wings.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

Trainer: Velasquez Must Be Technically Better, Not Faster Than Lesnar

Filed under: UFCLOS ANGELES -- Conventional wisdom in the fight game tells us that if you want to prepare for a specific opponent, the best way to do it is to bring in sparring partners that can mimic that opponent's signature attributes.

But when you're facing Brock Lesnar, whose success is built at least in part on his uncommon physical attributes, where do you even find such a training partner?

This is the problem that Cain Velasquez's trainer, AKA's Javier Mendez, had to confront over the last several weeks as they prepared for the UFC 121 title fight.

"See, that's the dilemma. Where do you find someone like Brock to train with? You don't. There is no one like him," Mendez told MMA Fighting. "All we can do is bring Division I, high-level wrestlers in, like Daniel Cormier, Mark Ellis. That was it. You can't duplicate Brock."

Bizarro World Video: Strikeforce Fighters and Personalities Make UFC 121 Predictions

(Video courtesy Fight!Magazine)
If a reporter were to ask Dana White who he was picking to win from an upcoming Strikeforce card, the UFC president would likely answer with something to the effect of, "Are you retarded? I don't fucking watch Strikeforce. That show is garbage," before walking away in disgust.
It's sad when pride and despising the competition gets in the way of being a fan of decent match-ups and it becomes the norm for reporters to pretend that other competing organizations don't exist when talking to promoters.
Fight! Magazine's Danny Acosta defied convention at the release party for the EA Sports MMA game this week and asked Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, commentator Frank Shamrock and fighters Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko for their picks for UFC 121 on Saturday night.
Shamrock came off like his usual arrogant self, proclaiming that he won't watch Jake Shields' UFC debut and that he hopes Kampmann kills him, but the rest of the Strikeforce crew give thoughtful insight into which fighters and why they will win the main and co-main events of the card.

Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC 120

Filed under: UFCNow that we've all had a chance to vent about how and when we saw UFC 120, let's all make like elected officials under investigation and put aside what we knew and when we knew it so that we might discuss what actually happened in London this weekend.

Maybe it wasn't such a great night for most of the British fighters on the main card, but the event still got a great reaction from the always enthusiastic U.K. crowd, even if there weren't quite as many soccer chants and sing-alongs as I'd like.

But enough with the preamble. Let's take a look at the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between from UFC 120.

Fedor's Strikeforce Future Could Be Determined This Week

(...and I want Gus Johnson's make-up artist to get me ready for each show.)
With just one fight remaining on his current Strikeforce contract, Fedor Emelianenko's future with the California-based promotion could be decided this week, according to the Russian heavyweight's manager Vadim Finkelchtein.
In an interview with MMAJunkie, Finkelchtein revealed that they are primarily negotiating with Showtime as they want to include in Fedor's contract a deal to co-promote Emelianko's fights with his M-1 Global corporation and Strikeforce's broadcast partner.
Does this strike anyone else as being a bit odd? Can you see Ed Soares sitting down with Spike TV to iron out the details of an Anderson Silva contract extension?

Great, Now Cheick Kongo Hates Us Too...

(Cool! We've always wanted to meet Cheick! / Image courtesy of Facebook.com/Real.Cheick.Kongo)
Sometimes when you're writing an MMA opinion blog, you forget that the fighters you occasionally talk shit about are real people, with real feelings, who would really beat the crap out of you if they found out where you lived. Case in point: Cheick Kongo, who didn't appreciate a certain article I recently posted about him. Cheick joins Dana White in the growing list of UFC-folks who won't be inviting me to any parties in the near future.
So Cheick, if you're reading this and you want some justice, please don't resort to violence. Instead, come onto our radio show next week so you can defend yourself and explain why you aren't a dirty fighter. Aldo-Hominick Tentatively Planned for January WEC Featherweight Title Bout if 'The Machine' Recovers From Broken Hand

(Hominick may be next in line to try to crack Aldo's seemingly impenetrable armor in January.)
WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo revealed in an interview with Tatame over the weekend that his next scheduled bout will be against former TKO featherweight champion Mark Hominick in January.
"Whoever it is, [I] always respect everyone," Aldo said. "We already have a defense in January, [and it] will be against Mark Hominick, a Canadian [who is] very good at kickboxing."
Aldo seemed a bit unsure about whether or not the fight with "The Machine" is a sure thing so we contacted Hominick's longtime mentor and trainer Shawn Tompkins today to find out if the fight is a go.
Tompkins tells us that his charge is still in a cast recovering from a broken hand he suffered training for his impressive victory over Leonard Garcia at WEC 51 last month.

'Diaz vs. Noons 2' Earns Strikeforce 509,000 Viewers During Main Event

Strikeforce ?Diaz vs. Noons 2? peaked with a viewership of 509,000 people tuned into Showtime to watch the night's featured fight. The event took place on Oct. 9 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

The ratings were first reported by MMAjunkie.com Tuesday, and Sherdog confirmed the numbers today with Strikeforce officials. The event netted an average of 350,000 viewers from start to finish and became Strikeforce's second-highest rated show of the year, trailing only their Miami show in January.

The Oct. 9 broadcast featured the long-awaited rematch between Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and nemesis K.J. Noons. The pair engaged in five punch-filled rounds, with Diaz eventually earning a unanimous decision. The win evened the fighters at one victory apiece, as Noons had previously defeated Diaz in their first matchup for the now-defunct EliteXC 160-pound title in 2007.

Brock Lesnar Ain't Got Time for Your Baiting Political Questions, MMA Media

(He might go home and try to get on top of his wife but he will not, we repeat not, get on top of your questions about immigration. PicProps: @DCBrockLesnar)
Since we’re already all so giddy to see these two behemoths get in the cage and crush skulls next weekend, it’s been pretty easy to overlook the fact that neither Brock Lesnar nor Cain Velasquez has done a great job selling UFC 121. Truth is they don't have to, since these titanic heavyweight matchups have a way of promoting themselves. Nonetheless, Velasquez has thus far proved too media savvy and Lesnar too mind-numbingly obstinate to say or do anything interesting leading up to their clash in Anaheim.
Even with two-thirds of “UFC Primetime” already in the books, you’d be hard-pressed to come up with a storyline for this bout aside from the run-of-the-mil “unstoppable force vs. immovable object” trope that’s worked so well for promoters for decades. For that reason, we’d like to offer up an earnest golf clap to whichever reporter tried to actually get the fighters to say something interesting during yesterday’s conference call by asking both Lesnar and Velasquez about Arizona’s recent controversial illegal immigration enforcement laws. Brilliant move that might’ve yielded solid gold results. Unfortunately, neither guy really took the bait.

Michael Bisping Will Deserve a Title Shot if He Beats Akiyama, Michael Bisping Says

(So guys, where they giving out the free sunglasses? PicProps: VegasNews.com)
Math must work differently in England, what with the metric system and everything. Otherwise, we can’t see exactly how Michael Bisping – who is 2-2 during the last 15 months – could possibly judge himself worthy of a middleweight title shot with a win over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 tonight. Conventional wisdom says a victory against the underwhelming Japanese “sensation” who himself is lucky just to be 1-1 in the Octagon could certainly put Bisping in line to fight somebody like Nate Marquardt or Demian Maia, but Anderson Silva? Seems like he’s got more than enough on his plate right now. Not surprisingly however, “The Count” sees himself at the front of the line.

New York, NY, October 8, 2010 ?</B> Spike TV will showcase a middleweight showdown between two former All-American wrestlers and a welterweight battle featuring a former standout performer on ?The Ultimate Fighter? and one of the sport?s rising stars in live undercard bouts from ?UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida? on Saturday, November 20, at 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT. Insanely popular UFC lightweight competitor Clay Guida recently confirmed his next opponent during an interview on Chicago's ESPN 1000 radio show.<BR><BR>

Grudge Over, Both Nick Diaz and KJ Noons Prove Their Points

Filed under: StrikeforceIt took three years, two fights, two promotions, an in-ring brawl and the memorable "Don't be scared, homie" catch phrase for Nick Diaz to get a chance to prove his point. All along, he said he was the better man, that KJ Noons had only won their first fight in Nov. 2007 because of scar tissue that caused his skin to rip open.

At the time, Diaz was so angry at the doctor's stoppage that he climbed up the cage's chain links, hopped over the side and escaped back to his dressing room. For a year, it seemed the rematch would happen, only it never did. For a time, Diaz had given up on it, believing he'd never get his chance to right the perceived wrong.

Somehow, Noons became the guy who won by a lucky cut, as if he hadn't roughed up Diaz over the five minutes they fought. Somehow, it had become a fluke. The public came to view Noons as the guy who took his win and ran away, choosing to chase a boxing career instead of granting Diaz a rematch.

In the end, Diaz vs. Noons II offered redemption for both.

Mike Pyle: By the Time I'm Done with Hathaway, I'll Have Some U.K. Fans

For many American fighters, the prospect of heading across the pond to fight a British opponent in the U.K. sounds about as much fun as an IRS audit.

There's the long flight to deal with, the significant time change, the near certainty that your sponsor's hat will be stolen off your head during your entrance, and, of course, a hostile crowd that's unanimously in the other guy's corner.

But for welterweight Mike Pyle, that only sweetens the deal.

"I love it," said Pyle, who on Saturday faces up-and-coming British welterweight John Hathaway at UFC 120 in London. "I love that none of the fans are going to like me. That's great. But I'm telling you, by the time I'm done with him, I'm going to capture some British fans, guaranteed. ...And at least they speak English over there."
