Paul Daley Vs. Scott Smith Now On Tap For Strikeforce Dec. 4th

NEW YORK (Sept. 29, 2010) ? Two fighters who loathe decisions will collide when recent STRIKEFORCE signee Paul ?Semtex?? Daley (25-9-2) of Nottingham, England, meets power puncher Scott ?Hands Of Steel? Smith (17-7, 1 NC) of Elk Grove, Calif., in a featured welterweight (170 pounds) bout on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Mixed martial arts superstar Dan Henderson will take on former STRIKEFORCE world champion Renato ?Babalu? Sobral at light heavyweight (205 pounds) in the main event. Football legend and unbeaten MMA fighter, the amazing Herschel Walker (1-0), will be opposed by an opponent to be determined in a televised heavyweight bout. Popular St. Louis native Jesse Finney will take on a foe to be announced in the top non-televised undercard scrap.

Daley is an exciting British bomber and freelance mixed martial artist whose style is a mix of striking, striking and more striking. Smith is a superb Muay Thai striker with tremendous one-punch knockout power. Neither is accustomed to putting in a full night?s work.

Combined, the fighters have 42 victories, but only five of those wins have come via decision, and all five belong to Daley. Smith, a pro since June 2001, has never been triumphant on points.

The world-ranked 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Daley scored a decision over Jorge Masvidal last Sept. 11. Prior to that, Daley?s last victory on points came on July 1, 2006.

?I am a striker ? there is no secret about that,?? said the brash-talking Daley, a winner of two in a row and six of his last seven. ?I like to knock people out aggressively and quickly. That's my game and no opponent's going to change that. Almost all my fights are exciting and memorable with non-stop action.??

Daley, who has compiled a highlight reel of impressive knockout victories, has competed against some of the best since turning professional in June 2003. Three of his most significant victories came against Masvidal, a 2:24, first-round KO (punches) over Dustin Hazelett on Jan. 2, 2010, and a 2:31, first-round TKO (punches) over Martin Kampmann on Sept. 19, 2009.

?Everyone knows I detest decisions,?? said the soft-spoken six-foot-tall, 31-year-old Smith, a proven finisher known for dramatic, stirring comebacks. He?s won all his fights by knockout or technical knockout ? 12 in the first round. The fight with Daley will mark Smith?s first start at 170 pounds.

?Fans want action all the time and so do I. That?s what I am all about.??

In his most recent start last June 26, Smith lost to former STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight (185 pounds) Champion Cung Le in a rematch, one fight after Smith handed Le the first loss of the San Jose-based Vietnamese star?s fight career with an astonishing comeback third-round knockout on Dec. 19, 2009. The dynamic Le had previously amassed a perfect, combined 22-0 record in professional MMA and kickboxing.

Smith has fought some of the biggest names in MMA, including Le, Diaz, Robbie Lawler (twice) ? their first fight was during the first-ever MMA primetime broadcast on the CBS Television Network) ? Benji Radach, Dave Terrell, Patrick Cote, James Irvin, Jaime Jara and Pete Sell.

A special ticket pre-sale for STRIKEFORCE; Henderson vs. Babalu for ?STRIKEFORCE Insiders? began yesterday and will conclude tomorrow/Thursday, September 30 at 10 p.m. CT. Fans can sign up to become an ?Insider? at STRIKEFORCE.com. Anyone who purchases tickets during the pre-sale period will receive a special $5 off discount.

Tickets for the event go on sale to the public this Friday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. CT at Scottrade Center, online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone (800) 745-3000.

Doors at Scottrade Center will open for the event at 6 p.m. CT. The first preliminary bout will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the first SHOWTIME televised main card fight will begin at 9 p.m.

WEC Prospect Alert: Is the 'Mongolian Wolf' the Next 'Korean Zombie'?

(He's just a dude, holding a belt, asking it to love him.)
On Thursday, Zhang Tie Quan will become the first fighter from mainland China to compete in the WEC. The China Top Team featherweight product will close out the preliminary portion of WEC 51 against Pablo Garza — who just made a brief appearance on TUF 12 as a lightweight hopeful — after being originally scheduled to face Alex Karalexis (out, injury) and then Jason Reinhardt (out, bad vision). It's a big moment for Chinese MMA, as well as for Zuffa, which has been angling toward expansion in Asia, but is generally short on Asian rising stars in its promotions. With "The Mongolian Wolf," they couldn't have picked up a better prospect.
Competing primarily in China's Art of War promotion and the Philippines' URCC outfit, Quan has racked up an 11-0 record, all wins by stoppage, with at least 10 of those victories coming in the first round. (The stoppage time of Quan's pro debut isn't listed on any MMA databases, or even AOW's official site.) Quan's last six wins have come via six different submissions, most recently a 30-second neck crank win against Daniel Digby, at a June event in Hong Kong. Quan holds a knockout victory over a guy named, I shit you not, De Gi Ji Ri Hu. For the last week, he's been acclimating to Colorado time (and American training partners) at the red-hot Grudge Training Center.
Notable quote, from this WEC profile: "I always admired the wolf because he was so ferocious and majestic. We saw a lot of wild wolves where I grew up and we all heard stories that if a wolf bites you on the arm for example, even if you kill it, its jaw will remain closed...I look at a fight with that same ferociousness...If there is any opportunity to finish, I finish. I won’t quit, I do my best and try to end things as quickly as possible."
After the jump: The Wolf in action.

Pablo Garza Replaces Jason Reinhardt, Will Face Tiequan Zhang at WEC 51

The WEC made the announcement via Twitter on Monday morning, and MMA Fighting has confirmed with sources close to Reinhardt that a failed eye exam will keep him from making his WEC debut.

Garza (7-0), Reinhardt's replacement, was one of 28 contestants vying for a spot in the house on the current Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter." UFC 119: Breakin ?Em Down and Pickin?

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

It's on again! Saturday night at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. We've got a stacked main card to look forward to, and some potentially explosive matches lined up for the undercard. So, let's get into it!

Matt Mitrione VS Joey Beltran:

I?m going to keep this one short and sweet; Beltran has proven himself a tough guy, there?s no question about it. But, there?s something special about Matt Mitrione, as much as I dislike his attitude, if this kid continues to dedicate himself, I believe he?ll be something special. Mitrione, TKO round three.

C.B. Dollaway VS Joe Doerkson:

All the mileage on Doerkson?s body is beginning to take it?s toll. He looks like he?s lost a step, and actually gotten a little sloppier as of late. That being said, he continues to find a way to win, usually punctuating his bouts with impressive finishes. Dollaway on the other hand is still a young prospect with a lot to learn. He?s a relatively diverse fighter with an ability to finish which always makes him dangerous. I?m going to go ahead and say Doerkson takes a beating for a round or two before reversing the situation and snagging a fight ending armbar. I know, it may be a long shot.

Jeremy Stephens VS Melvin Guillard:

Good lord, I really don?t know what to say about this fight. These two are going to swing often, and swing hard. If Stephens stays awake after Guillard lands, we?ll see this fight hit the mat the moment Guillard eats something he doesn?t savor. He?s got the better wrestling, and no matter how hard headed these guys are, they want to win, by any means necessary. Melvin Guillard wins a unanimous decision after some nasty exchanges, and solid takedowns paired with serious ground and pound.

Evan Dunham VS Sean Sherk:

I?ve always been a fan of Sean Sherk. The guy exhibits as much heart as muscle, but he?s got to decide what kind of a fighter he wants to be: exciting, or successful? If the Sherk who?s opted to become a boxer shows up, Dunham?s going to utilize that reach advantage of his to destroy Sherk. If Sherk opts to wrestle, we?re looking at a much more competitive fight, that I believe the young Dunham will win regardless. This kid isn?t as slept on as he was just a year ago, but he?s still not receiving the attention he deserves. Evan Dunham defeats Sean Sherk via third round submission.

Matt Serra VS Chris Lytle:

Serra and Lytle are in virtually the same position at this point in their career: they?ve both had some great wins, and they both fight a whole hell of a lot younger than they actually are. The biggest difference aside from experience is the fact that Serra has not only held the welterweight title, but he beat one of the best fighters in the world, Georges St. Pierre to get it. However, considering recent performances, and factoring in their bout on Spike?s The Ultimate Fighter, I?m going to pick Lytle to win this fight. I believe he?ll press to finish the match, and he?ll press hard. I also believe that despite having far more professional bouts, and being a part time fighter, part time fire fighter, Chris Lytle is the fresher of the two. This one manages to go the distance, but it?s Chris Lytle at the helm from the beginning.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira VS Ryan Bader:

We all know what ?Little Nog? is made of. He?s proven it time and again, beating some of the sports absolute best over thee years. Bader meanwhile has barely graduated beyond rookie status. This is an interesting clash of styles, as Nogueira is the more refined fighter with the crisper strikes and superior Jiu Jitsu, while Bader is the better wrestler with (possibly) more power in his hands. If Nogueira shows up and performs anything like he did against Jason Brilz, he?s in for a passing-of-the-torch moment, and an ugly surprise. Nogueira has the potential to submit Bader, and that could ultimately be the key to this fight. Can Bader avoid taking too much damage while exchanging and keep the fight on his fight? If he can?t do that, and he absorbs enough punishment to encourage an instinctual takedown, he may well be in for a world of hurt. It?s a tough call for me, but I?m going to go wit h the prospect here and say Bader knocks Nogueira out early in the first round for the nights big shocker.

Frank Mir VS Mirko ?Crocop? Filipovic:

When Crocop doesn?t even believe he can win the fight, it?s bad news. I?ll keep my fingers crossed and hope to God for a Crocop knockout victory (I?ll always be a fan, win or lose the guy was an absolute freak of fighting nature in his prime), but it?s not going to happen. Frank Mir is just a bit too versatile for the Croation striker. Frank Mir earns a second round submission victory after breaking the will of Crocop early.

Micklewright vs.. Poirier On Deck For WEC 52

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Zack Micklewright and Dustin Poirier are both looking to rebound from the first losses of their careers. (Video courtesy MMAWeekly)
During a media scrum ahead of his UFC 119 bout with Frank Mir, Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic was asked about his career, his future in MMA and whether or not chasing a title is in his plans.
When asked where he sees himself in the UFC's heavyweight division, Cro Cop danced around the question like a politician.

Matt Mitrione: I'm That Guy People Don't Wanna Get Punched By

Filed under: UFCAll eyes were on Matt Mitrione.

The former NFL and all-Big Ten Conference lineman at Purdue had already been labeled a rat by his "Ultimate Fighter" housemates for spilling his team's planned matchups to the opposition. He had been called out by his coach, Rashad Evans, for being merely sore and not injured. And then there were the voices in his head (which he has said after the fact was just an act to alleviate boredom).

Against Scott Junk in a preliminary fight on TUF 10, Mitrione threw kicks and punches with wild abandon. Near the end of the first round, it was clear he had already used up most of his energy. He won a majority decision in a fight that was a mashup of ugly and fun.

A year later, Mitrione is 2-0 in the UFC with a knockout win over Marcus Jones on the TUF 10 live finale last December and a TKO of Kimbo Slice at UFC 113 in May. But it was the fight with Junk that helped make a different voice go off in his head. It was a voice that told him to slow up a little, and Mitrione said that's the most important thing he's learned since leaving the TUF house.

Three Pivotal Matches Added To WEC 52: "Faber vs. Mizugaki"

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Zuffa has been assembling one hell of a fight card for WEC 52. Aside from some very intriguing bouts like Faber/Mizugaki and Page/Wineland, three new extremely relevant matches have been added to the card.

In the hopes of rebounding from his (first and only) TKO loss to current champion Dominick Cruz, Brian Bowles will lock horns with seasoned veteran Wagnney Fabiano who has earned four victories in five fights for the promotion.

The unbeaten Team Alpha Male product Chad Mendes will also return to the cage following his decision victory over Cub Swanson at WEC 50. He?ll tangle with highly touted Javier Vazquez who?s earned back-to-back victories against Jens Pulver and Mackens Semerzier.

In what could point to a future title challenger, Josh Grispi will face-off against Erik Koch. Grispi hasn?t lost a bout in four years and remains unbeaten (4-0) under the WEC banner. Koch on the other hand holds a 2-1 record for the promotion. He?ll be seeking his greatest career victory when he fights Grispi come November 11th.

Sarah Kaufman Says Fighters Need to Stand Up for What They Deserve

Filed under: StrikeforceStrikeforce 135-pound women's champion Sarah Kaufman will get her wish when she takes on Marloes Coenen on the main card of Strikeforce's next big Showtime event on October 9 in San Jose, and she has no regrets about what she had to do to make it happen.

"I think it's important for fighters to stand up for what they deserve," Kaufman said on Friday afternoon's Strikeforce media call, responding to questions about her post-fight remarks following a victory over Roxanne Modafferi on a Strikeforce Challengers card in July.

"You don't want to make your organization look bad, but if your issue needs to be said, I'm happy I said what I said and I think my fight kind of backed that up," Kaufman added. "Whether it was me talking or the fans reacting or the fight itself getting highlighted on ESPN, I think they all worked together in helping push the division and have a title [fight] on the main card."

That title fight pits the undefeated Kaufman against a Dutch challenger who posted a loss in her last outing - a 145-pound title scrap against Strikeforce champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos - only don't try telling Coenen that she doesn't deserve back-to-back title shots in different divisions.

Matt Serra, Chris Lytle Expecting Much Different Fight in Sequel at UFC 119

Filed under: Strikeforce, FanHouse ExclusiveChris Lytle was "surprised" when the UFC called to offer him a rematch with Matt Serra. Serra was downright "shocked."

Typical UFC rematches happen soon after a controversial finish or because a title is on the line. When they come four years later, it's usually because of some bad blood, an old grudge or because the first fight was so good it's hard to resist going to the well one more time.

But that's not really the case with Serra-Lytle II on Saturday at UFC 119 in Indianapolis. By both Serra and Lytle's admissions, their first meeting was, well, a bit of a dud.

Report: Chael Sonnen Tests Hot For Performance Enhancing Drugs

All those fans that Chael Sonnen gained by laying a whooping on Anderson Silva for four and a half rounds before succumbing to a submission may want to hold off buying any of that Sonnen merchandise they have been eye balling as Sherdog.com is reporting that the CSAC has informed them that Sonnen has tested hot for PED's following UFC 117:

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

... In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

If this is in fact true it tarnishes an amazing performance and likely puts an end to a rematch that had been scheduled for early 2011 as a fine and lengthy suspension are now on the menu for Sonnen.

Following the news of the test, Ed Soares, Silva's manager commented on the story:

"If it?s true, I feel really bad for him," said Soares. "I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished."

Phil Baroni Calls Chael Sonnen's Approach to Promoting Fights 'Lame'

Filed under: MMA Videos, UFC, FanHouse Exclusive, News, VideosCount Phil Baroni among those who aren't impressed by Chael Sonnen's recent, for lack of a better word, trash-talk.

"He's reading the book that I wrote. It's out of style," Baroni said on Thursday's episode of The MMA Hour.

"I don't like it. I mean, whatever. It's OK. I think that new kid, who just beat Matyushenko [Jon Jones], what he says, that's like a breathe of fresh air. It's nice to see someone talk like him interviews."

Throughout his 10-year career, "The New York Bad Ass" has always been known as one of the more outspoken and eccentric fighters in the sport, so it was somewhat surprising to hear him say that Sonnen is "over the top right now."

Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC Fight Night 22

Filed under: UFCI don't know about you, but when I sit through a bunch of commercials encouraging me to play an endless stream of video games on my rented TV while eating a fast-food breakfast, I expect to be rewarded with some quality fights. Fortunately, last night's UFC Fight Night event didn't let me down, even if I still woke up and ate a banana this morning instead of a 500-calorie grease bowl.

The big lesson we learned from last night's fights is that if you are in a situation where another human being is trying to hurt you, it's probably best to keep your attention on that person at all times. Don't look away. Don't get distracted by your oppnent's soft, slippery smooth skin. Don't assume that he would never hit a person who isn't making direct eye contact with him. He totally will, and it will totally be your fault when he does.

Rousimar Palhares learned that lesson at the hands of Nate Marquardt last night, and he learned it in painful fashion. Let's just hope he only has to learn it once. Now, on to the big winners, losers, and everything in between from last night's fights.

Cavalcante To Make Strikeforce Debut Against Thomson On 10/9?

By MATT BOONE
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

According to recent reports, Alex Davis, manager to highly regarded 155-pound MMA contender Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, confirmed his fighters' next match on a recent edition of MMAWeekly.com Radio. In an interesting pairing, JZ Cavalcante will make his Strikeforce debut against former champion of their lightweight division, Josh "The Punk" Thomson.

The match would likely have title implications in Strikeforce, with the winner moving closer to a crack at current Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez, which in the case of Thomson would cap off an exciting trilogy of fights.

Thomson (17-3) last fought at the infamous Strikeforce/M-1 Global co-promoted event in Thomson's hometown of San Jose, the event which saw the legendary streak of Fedor Emelianenko ended by rising contender Fabricio Werdum. That same night, Thomson took out a game Pat Healy by rear-naked choke with just seconds left of the final round of their entertaining bout, one many felt was the fight of the night that June 26th evening. A win over the respected Cavalcante would certainly move along Thomson's quest to get back in the cage with multiple-time rival Melendez.

Cavalcante (15-3-1) on the other hand has spent the majority of his MMA career in various Japanese-based organizations, compiling an impressive list of wins on his MMA resume, as he had several of the finest 155 lb. fighters not signed by the UFC to challenge himself against. JZ's last performance came just two months ago at DREAM 15, where he took a tough split decision over Katsunori Kikuno. Prior to the victory, Cavalcante had been out of action healing up after a pair of losses to the top ranked Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri. A win over Thomson in his Strikeforce debut would set up a new legitimate lightweight contender for the San Jose-based promotion to utilize, one who often puts on entertaining fights when he enters the ring or cage.

The Cavalcante-Thomson match would serve as an undercard bout at the Strikeforce: San Jose event on October 9. The main event that night will be a grudge match for the Strikeforce welterweight title, as current champion Nick Diaz defends his title against former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons. Noons is the last man to defeat Diaz, as he took their November 10, 2007 fight by technical knockout due to doctor stoppage after one round. After the victory all hell broke loose as Diaz's corner stormed the cage, leading to a skirmish between both camps.

The Diaz-Noons rematch joins Cavalcante-Thomson, along with a women's welterweight title fight between Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen and Matt Lindland vs. Luke Rockhold, as matches announced for the 10/9 event, which emanates from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, which is basically home-turf for the consensus number two mixed-martial arts promotion in North America.

Houston Alexander Talks UFC, Sokoudjou, And Getting Paid

By Chris Howie

Houston Alexander will meet one of the toughest tests of his career this week when he meets Thierry Sokoudjou in Amarillo, TX at Shark Fights 13 Saturday night.

The Nebraskan feels confident heading into the bout and talked about his opponent with MMANews.com this week. ?Sokoudjou is a tough guy man but I?m a strong guy too. We're both powerful and quick so I think it all depends on who gets to the punch first or who gets the take down first and who is more aggressive. I'm physically and mentally ready so I?m ready for this whole thing. I?m completely healthy and coming into this fight, injury free.?

Since leaving the UFC, Alexander has gone 1-1, losing via TKO and winning a decision. ?The Assassin? looks to get back to the winning side and a change in training and a game plan that worked in the past has him hopeful ?You get to see old Houston. After changing things up a bit for my last fights you're going to see that raw style back this time. That is the style that has won me fights over the last few years. I've made things better for this fight. I've dotted the I's and crossed the T's.?

Eight of his ten wins have come via knockout or submission due to strikes and that was something many expected to see in his fight against Kimbo Slice but the game plan going into that fight didn?t look for the KO ?That was the game plan the coaching staff worked out for me and I tried to follow it. I went to a whole bunch of riggamond roll but I followed it. That's what happens. If the coaching staff tells you to do something you do it. As a professional fighter that's my job. It wasn't a very popular fight for a lot of people though.?

That would be his last fight in the UFC and although he didn?t leave on bad terms, he?s not necessarily concerned about going back to the UFC ?I didn?t leave on bad terms. Unfortunately with that Kimbo fight it was the last fight on the contract so it was done at the time. There?s always a chance I could go back to the UFC but it's really just all about the money. I?m not necessarily worried about going back to the UFC. The way I am it doesn't matter who I?m fighting as long as I?m winning. A W is more important than fighting for an organization because once you have the W's the organizations will call you.?

When the card was first announced it was rumored that Alexander would face Keith Jardine in a rematch of their UFC bout but that fell through and Alexander explains why ?I don't want to fight Keith Jardine again. That would take away from the essence of the first fight. It just doesn't seem right to me to fight him again. That was my breakthrough fight so why do I want to go back to that again. If it was that important it's something we should have done in the UFC.?

A one off deal with Shark Fights is on the table but Alexander says if things go well he?d like to stick around ?If it works out that they want us to stick around and want to pay the money I?m worth than we might stick around because they've done some good cards so far. I?m happy to be part of this card because there are some big names on it.?

Fireworks are expected when Alexander and Sokoudjou meet up this weekend as both have powerful hands and explosive speed ?I feel we kind of mirror each other in a lot of the things we do so if he comes out trying to do what I?m trying to do that you can expect an exciting fight. It should be real exciting when you put two assassins in the same room.?

Alistair Overeem To Fight Ben Edwards For K-1 On October 2

By MATT BOONE
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem's next fight has been made official by the event promoter. Unfortunately for MMA fans, it wasn't Scott Coker, and it won't be under the Strikeforce banner.

Instead, as he has been hinting at in recent interviews, Overeem will return to the K-1 ring during their World Grand Prix FINAL 16 event on October 2nd in Seoul, South Korea. Overeem's opponent that night at the Olympic Gymnasium will be this year's K-1 Oceania Grand Prix champion -- Ben Edwards.

Edwards, who holds an overall kickboxing record of 37-6-1 (with 12 KOs), won the K-1 Oceania Grand Prix tournament back in July of this year with three first-round knockouts. Edwards took out Faisal Kazaria, Tafi Misipati and long-time K-1 veteran Paul Slowinski all via KO in one round en route to becoming the K-1 Oceania GP 2010 champion.

Overeem sports a respectable K-1 record of 6-4 (with 4 KOs). On paper the statistic doesn't reflect his current status with the elite kickboxing promotion, as he recently garnered more acclaim under the K-1 banner with his impressive victories over Badr Hari and Peter Aerts. Overeem last fought for the promotion in April at their K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 event in Yokohama, Japan, taking out Dzevad Poturak by knockout due to knee in just over two minutes of the first round.

The Overeem-Edwards bout joins Jerome LeBanner vs. Keijiro "Kyotaro" Maeda as matches officially announced by K-1 promoter Sadaharu Tanigawa for the K-1 World GP FINAL 16 event on October 2nd. The event will also feature eight Super-Heavyweight Grand Prix bouts that evening, including participation from Semmy Schilt, Badr Hari, Ruslan Karaev, Ewerton Teixeira and Errol Zimmermann.

Depending on the physical status of Overeem following the 10/2 K-1 bout, the standout fighter from the Golden Glory camp will be back under the spotlight, as MMA fans look to see who (and more importantly when) he competes again under the Strikeforce banner, defending his heavyweight title against a top contender in their division, which features talent such as Fedor Emelianenko, Fabricio Werdum and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, just to name a few.

Share your thoughts on Overeem's decision to compete in K-1 for his next fight, as well as the current mess in the Strikeforce heavyweight division, by heading over to the MMANEWS.COM Forums and/or the MMANEWS.COM Facebook Page.

Drew Fickett Taps Out Three Opponents to Become Shine GP Champion

Call it a comeback, at least for one night.

Drew Fickett, who around 2005 was considered one of the best welterweights in the world, entered the limelight for the first time in years and submitted three opponents Friday night to win the inaugural Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix tournament at the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Okla.

The evening was a significant turnaround for Fickett, who entered the pay-per-view event losing five of his last six and eight of his last 11. And Fickett took full advantage of his opportunity to impress, finishing quickly in his trio of tourney bouts.

Noons.
